Learn How to Create Excellent Materials for Your Nonprofit

High Touch Communication helps clients increase the responses to their marketing campaigns by adding a human touch to your communications. Our data indicated that the executives we surveyed prefer narratives over expository texts by a ratio of 9:1.

Importance of Storytelling

We profiled the writing of 880 U.S. nonprofits and among these, 735 raise at least $20 million annually. This study was conducted to refute an earlier study by Indiana University Professors, Ulla Connor and Thomas Upton.

According to our study, we discovered that these supposed “sophisticated” nonprofits contained fewer linguistic features compared to other organizations. As a result, they are unable to create an interpersonal connection with readers.

These markers are important as they create an interpersonal connection with readers. What’s more, the texts written by nonprofits in this study contained even less narrative than their Indiana counterparts and even official government documents.

Our Fundraising Approach

At our company, we believe that a fundraising story must be bridled so it doesn’t gallop off like a wild horse. It must achieve the objective of raising funds and must implicitly and explicitly show that by giving, a donor can move the “story” toward resolution.

As a fundraiser, you must not allow the story told to camouflage the cause or suffocate the ask. Marketing is crucial to the success of any business and is just as important in nonprofits. Effective use of language is critical in crafting a successful message.

Learn How Computer HandScript Increased American Heart Association's Response Rate by 346%

Doctoral studies at Claremont Graduate University's Peter F. Drucker School of Management and the School of Educational Studies compared real handwriting with two alternative methods:

  • Computer Simulated Handwriting
  • Conventional Type Mailed in a Window Envelope

A dissertation chapter by High Touch founder, Frank Dickerson, presents the data illustrating the impact of Computer HandScript on direct mail results.

The test measured the effects of handwriting in campaigns that the American Heart Association sent to more than a million households to test these three direct mail package styles:

  1. Using the organization's conventional window envelope with a typed address from the letter showing through the window
  2. Using real human handwriting
  3. Using Computer HandScript simulated handwriting
